If people were genuinely concerned about the wealthy getting $$$ they don’t need, they’d support calls for a wealth tax, not a “targeting” of who gets $2K checks... 1/
...$2K checks are a drop in the bucket when it comes to addressing wealth inequality. This deduction, debate & delay on the promise of “$2K checks going out immediately” is doing nothing but hurting those most in need while hurting Dem chances of holding control of Congress. 2/
I’m glad that there is pushback on the idea that $1.9T is too much, however, because that’s without a doubt the most asinine argument circulating right now. You don’t have to be an economist to understand that, you only need a basic awareness of history & current events. 3/
Only way to avoid a Great Depression-type event is to do massive spending & job creation via the public sector. They’re gonna have to create jobs thru infrastructure spending & do massive housing programs similar to the New Deal. There’s no other realistic path. 4/
We could be creating so many jobs through housing construction, food relief & vaccine distribution alone right now. This is not the time to think small, it’s the moment to accept that neoliberalism/ Reaganism is dead. It’s been rejected by majorities on the right & the left. 5/
The only people still clinging to a failed neoliberal philosophy that’s more rooted in hostility toward the poor than any practical economic strategy are relics of the past like Summers who helped usher in the disasters were dealing with now. It’s a new day. 6/6
