I want to tell you about six people killed at the Gainesville poultry plant after a nitrogen leak. I start with Nelly Perez because of what she did that day. First, know she was 28, from Mexico, took her little girl to mass. They were so beautiful, people always noticed. 1/8
At Prime Pak, Perez worked in quality control, checking on machines and such. Co-workers knew her as caring, dedicated and calm under pressure, but last Thursday morning, she was crying at work. An accident happened, she said through tears to a co-worker in up in the office. 2/8
The co-worker was Yamilex Estrada. Accidents happen and most aren't that bad, but Estrada heard her friend's voice, and it scared her. She did want Perez had asked: tell the others. Soon, dozens of workers were escaping the danger. "She always cared for others," Estrada said. 3/8
Now: Jose DeJesus Elias-Cabrera, 45. He came from Mexico nearly 20 years ago. He worked seven days a week and hardly did anything for himself. What was important to him? His mom, back home, with no income. He worked for her. "I think he lived for his mom," a nephew said. 4/8
Corey Alan Murphy, 35. Father. Veteran with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He trained horses, rode with the kids. A Kentucky native. Outgoing, generous and kind, they say. A loved one called him Superman. 5/8
Edgar Vera-Garcia, 28. He had three children. Two girls and a boy. He liked to buy his wife flowers. He'd already been by Nena's Florist the other day, plotting the Valentine's Day bouquet. 6/8
Victor Vellez, 38. He had two boys. He took them to mass at St. Michael's parish. Deacon Lampert knew the family. “His wife,” Lampert said, “has had a very difficult time.” 7/8
Saulo Suarez-Bernal, 41. He came from Matamoros in Mexico, spitting distance from the U.S. border. Like all the other victims, he was a Christian. “God called him home," a loved one said, "and even though we miss him, we trust His plan.” 8/8
