A few thoughts on work and progress: work, especially meaningful work or creative work, is rarely appreciated in the beginning. Harvest is preceded by a million unimpressive steps that don’t feel particularly inspiring or rewarding.
We live in a world that is obsessed with measuring…but at the beginning of a thing…or the beginning of changing a thing…most of what happens is barely measurable at all. Here you have to trust your gut and your best instincts…
because the dopamine rush of counting bigger numbers probably isn’t a reality.
When it comes to change and creative work I’ve found that this is a decent way of seeing things: first you do something different or new, then you feel something different or new…and then finally, after a good long time, you become something different.
In the beginning of a project…if you need to count thing…notice and count all the things that are different. Let your encouragement come from the fact that you are leaning into courage by going in a new direction or trying something new.
Play the long game…or as Brother Wendell Berry says…invest in the millennium.
