Phillips worked hard and continued his education, becoming principal of Harriet Beecher Stowe School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1936. While working as a teacher he earned a BA, an MA, and in 1939, a Ph.D. in Education.
In 1968, Phillips was awarded an honorary doctorate of pedagogy from the University of Cincinnati.
In addition to George’s ephemera of a life in education, and a manuscript titled "My struggle for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree," the George & Myrtle Phillips collection also includes diaries kept by Myrtle. The diaries chronicle her day to day life in Ohio in the 1930s-1960s.
