The #lockdown has impacted us in various ways, the most significant for me was the cosmic screen-time 📱. To combat this I decided to do something about it as a resolution.

Here is a 🧵 on how I reduced my screen time (mobile) by 1.5 times by just one method --> (1/9)

I started looking for various apps/solutions for the problem and came across a lot of options, some of them are listed below:

1) Stacking notifications
2) Screen time analytics applications
3) Productivity themes and launchers
(3/9)
Some notable mentions were Indistractable ( @indistract) which is a #minimalist launcher that significantly helped me reduce screen time

@forestapp_cc helped me set targets for myself while also making the process engaging and kept me interested for a while

I regularly read articles by @finshots and the notification stacking capability through the app helped me tackle the urge of clicking push notifications

All the apps above helped me greatly in my pursuit but I ended up not using them eventually, bad habits do die hard.

I realized that there was no major upside in these solutions, to kill a habit like this I needed something that was equally as susceptible and helped me overcome this problem

Then I came across a study on how colors stimulate the brain and their effect on our psychology. The bright colors of the app icons are for a reason and are based on a concept called color signaling which essentially explores how colors and shapes grab our attention

As we all know attention is the new currency and I was interested in investing in something productive instead of casually scrolling down reels. So I decided to go greyscale with my UI. Which in my opinion was a straightforward solution to my problem

Something interesting to note how I had to go through multiple layers of settings to access this capability which was something intentional in my opinion

Anyways it has been over a month since I have gone grey and I do not intend to go back.

This solution however also came with some problems which I would like to mention below:

1) Judging traffic in routes through Google Maps becomes difficult
2) If you are into design then this solution would not be the best alternative
3) It is too damn difficult to go back
