Borrell and Lavrov talks:
* EU's top diplomat repeats demand for @navalny to be released but says no plans for any sanctions should Moscow ignore that
* Borrell also calls for Russia's @sputnikvaccine to be approved by the EU, to help ease the bloc's jab shortage
Borrell’s visit goes from bad to worse:
During talks with Lavrov, news leaks that Russia is expelling three European diplomats for “attending” Navalny protests. Moscow says they participated, EU says they were observing. https://www.ft.com/content/3b42a7ea-5753-4c2f-8567-e7efbe49c37c
So, Borrell’s Moscow trip in full:
+ Tells Lavrov no sanctions likely for @Navalny jailing, literally as Navalny is being tried in court once again
+ Calls for EU to approve Russia’s @sputnikvaccine, in boost to Moscow
+ Mid-talks, learns Russia is expelling three EU diplomats
Borrell, stood beside Lavrov (who had just ordered the expulsion of 3 EU diplomats):
"Over the last years relations have been marked by fundamental differences & lack of trust... [But] Russia is our biggest neighbour & part of Europe... We have to look for areas where we agree"
Borrell’s visit to Moscow makes the front of tomorrow’s @FinancialTimes - but probably not for the reasons he would have hoped
