Following the programme & comments I wanted to show some ways to garden for wildlife & grow no dig.a thread, take bits & scale down if you want to enhance wildlife in your garden. They do use it more. @autisticgardner @SeeWhyGardens @BotanyRocks #yourgardenmadeperfect
#WoodPilesForWildlife stacking fallen or collected wood gives room for small mammals & beetles & insects to live in, providing food & shelter & enhancing the wildlife food chain. Small or large bug hotel or for larger guests!
Bird feeding stations, different foods at different heights & positions. This garden has a variety of tits, a visiting heron, nuthatch, robin, dunnock, Bull/Green/GoldFinch, blackbirds, Redwing passing through, & last year a green woodpecker feeding in red ants. Also nest boxes
Access to and from the garden. We have A Badger set, Foxes, Rats, Mice, a SparroHawk, oddly no hedgehogs??? But there is access & evidence of animal activity from digging to tracks to dens & they all have access to & from the garden through fence holes.
Ponds and water available for wildlife to drink from, we have frogs newts, dragon flies galore a little water makes a difference, even if it's just a birdbath or pebble pond. Water butts capture rain water for reuse on the garden. A yellow flash of grey wagtail passes through.
Carry on growing, if you have space inside, a garage or shed, grow your own can be started, plants can be saves, these are last year's geraniums, and just well enjoyed. Even indoors with no garden a plant is good for you.
Compost compost compost! No dig no dig no dig. Re use & recycle everything. Compost bins, a compost bay saves waste. Cut & drop provides mulch & organic matter back into the ground. Layer with manure, compost & shred garden waste. Leave fruit for foragers. Who needs tidy, not me😊
Lawn, ok, but add interest & texture with wildflower garden planting, easy maintenance cut once a year, add patches of favourites and brush grass for overwintering insects. This lawn is mowed but I Cut & leave grass, it gets reabsorbed, easy gardening.
Dead wood mushrooms & lichen, oh the joy, leave it, that's all you need to do, leave it and they will come. Little jungles or marvellous was, magical kingdoms right under your nose. Free, absolutely zero cost.
Don't cut, leave. Everything that comes from a garden can be left in a garden either to add organic matter, homes for wildlife, material for nesting, to shelter, overwintering life that will add to the diversity & food chain increasing activity in your garden.its not just for us.
I hope that helps with ideas, & gets away from the norm of straight edges, neat lawns, there's so much more to enjoy in a garden when we share it with wildlife, chose one thing, a little bit is enough to enhance your space. No Araucaria Araucana were harmed during this thread!😁
