Root may have been 45 off 100 balls yet. But at one stage he was 18 off 63, for a batsman whose career S/R is 54.

It's not that he was not showing 'Intent' earlier, but Ishant & Ashwin were bowling brilliantly and he realised the importance of staying on the pitch. (contd)
Because he knew the fragility of the English batting line up, and he knew that he'd have a chance to score runs against 4th & 5th bowler relatively easier. If Jadeja was playing here, his SR would still have been lower because Jadeja is that good when it comes to tying batsmen
down and keep attacking at the same time. First 11 overs in this session, England only scored 14 runs. The difference between Eng batsmen here & Indian batsmen in Australia was the relentless of the 4th & 5th bowler, not necessarily just down to Intent of the batsmen.
What also helps is the respective quality of a Joe Root & Pujara. Root, without a doubt, is more skilled than Pujara and that shouldn't be a criticism for Pujara.
