This program is the fulfillment of a promise made by @AEJMC leadership past and present, namely @mariehardinpsu David Perlmutter and @TPVos. It came up during the 2019-2020 AY, when I served as Chair for @CSW_AEJMC. #proflife
We were discussing issues of racial equity in mass com/journalism programs, and I mentioned how important it is for students from underrepresented backgrounds to have mentors *outside* of their programs. #proflife
@DocDre was that person for me. When I was working on my dissertation about #BlackTwitter, at a time when no one in my school knew it was a thing, being able to connect with him was a lifeline. #proflife
As a grad student, I never had the opportunity to publish with a faculty member. Honestly, it's still difficult for me to talk about.
But at the foundation of my commitment to this work is that others will not have to experience the same challenges I experienced. #ProfLife

Hence this grant program.
I told @AEJMC's exec board that students need structural support; that there are too many assumptions about what we're prepared to do upon arrival. Mentorship + money is what I requested for this program.

And true to their word, @AEJMC delivered. I believe the funding for this comes out of the the president's fund from @mariehardinpsu's tenure, if I'm not mistaken. Marie, I thank you. The recipients of these grants thank you. #ProfLife
