Some years ago, let’s say ten, maybe twelve, I was writing. It turned into a blog. It was an outlet. But it was the best gateway I could’ve opened. That motioned me to photography, to painting. (I also have like ten other things I don’t tell y’all about bc it’s my business)
I’ve ran from the creative lifestyle for a long time - supporting others and ignoring the call.
The call got too loud to ignore.
The reality is, creating has saved me. When no one is around, when everyone leaves - God, me and the work are all there. The work can be in any form. From making a simple, exquisite meal or just hanging the art right in my house.
The work is a gateway back to hidden parts of myself. Even when the work is bad, it’s in the action and motion. It’s in the showing up. I’m learning most of my evolution has been in showing up for myself.
The reality is, we have to find things we love to do that give us a break, let us find another sort of freedom. There’s already enough to break us. We keep close the things that make us light, bring light, create light. Things that let us be free.
Don’t ignore the things you’re most passionate about. Please.
One other thing I’d like to add here : everything isn’t done to be monetized. Keep something for yourself. Some projects and things you just do for you, for more access to yourself. But those are just for your spirit and soul.
As @__BHB__ said in her meditation I tweeted “There’s often restoration in the sides of ourselves we don’t give ourselves access to...whether it’s because of time or circumstance, there is restoration there.” https://www.instagram.com/tv/CLCE93aJ4Z4/?igshid=15kmwiygglpmg
She also said “you maximize rest when you allow yourself to dream.” - @__BHB__ (nailed it!)
She put it perfectly. Those creative outlets that are calling you should be tended to — even in a pandemic - especially now tbh. (Panasonic/ El Pan / Pan de Luxxe).
Reminder: work on your personal projects this week. Give them some time + love. Open the notebook, the paint, rearrange the space + clean, order that equipment, tool or part you need, price things out — if nothing else write down your dreams + plans during Black Futures Month.
Also ... it’s not too late and you’re not too old (or young) to pursue your passions or dreams.
