My 13 yrs of residence in the US are marked by many moments that white people never understand/see, because they usually don't have to.

In 2013 when I was working at a hospital in Florida, an 80 yo woman was admitted under my care. + https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1357488834397765635
On day 2, when I went to see her, she refused to be examined or seen by me. She asked for another doctor.

Disappointed (bc that rarely happens to me), I reflected on my first day with her and couldn't remember any incident or issue that would explain it.
That same day her roommate, another white patient, called as I was walking by their room. I went in

Roomate: Doc, I'm sorry, but if that older lady says anything to you or files a complaint, I'll be your witness.

Me: ..... I didn't know I needed a witness. +
Roommate: She ... she said somethings I can't tell you. I wasn't raised that way.

Me: Maam, what did she say?

Roommate *visibly discomfited*: After u left, she said how dare that ... that sand n**g*er examine me. 'll tell his superiors.

Me: ....

That was the day I knew no matter how good a doctor I was, how much time I spent with my patients, how educated, and well-trained I was, I would always be a sand nig**r to many of these white patients.

That some white folk can finally see this how many of their peers in Congress and the Senate and their constituents see Congresswomen @IlhanMN, @AOC, @RashidaTlaib and @AyannaPressley is not a surprise.

The surprise is how long it took so many of them to realize it.
