I used to be a "ADHD wouldn't exist outside of capitalism" person. I was wrong. I'm sure that we would describe, understand, and experience ADHD very differently in a world not centered around productivity, but neurodiversity exists in any social system.
We might not pathologise ADHD in this alternate utopia. We might not even describe it as "ADHD" in a world that places less value on attentive efficiency. But ADHDers would still exist, and likely still in a way that conflicts with the mainstream culture.
Who knows what our neurodivergency would look like in an alternative universe. I'd probably still experience many of my ADHD traits, though they might manifest very differently. Maybe they would be embraced. Maybe they wouldn't.
I know capitalism pathologises behaviours that aren't inherently bad. I also know that my ADHD struggles can't be reduced to that alone. Some of my ADHD traits are hard regardless of how they're interpreted in society.
Anyway, I think I'd probably still need accomodations and understanding in an alternate universe because I still wouldn't fit into the mainstream. Capitalism frames my difference as negative, but the difference exists regardless.
Ultimately, I'm over the "lol adhd isn't real it's all capitalism" discourse. It reduces something super complex into a flippant dunk. It undermines the validity of support we need in the capitalist world we are actually in, and reinforces ableism. No thanks.
