The reason you should memorize Psalm 50 is not some kind of punishment or requirement.

The Church wants you to know this because there will be a time where you will need to know it.
There will be a time that will come in your life where you will feel pain and fear in a way that you can’t describe on social media. You will feel a sorrow for your entire life in a way that no one can understand or listen to but Christ.
You may be overwhelmed with a sin. You may be pained with regret. You may feel a passion that you can’t even explain to your Priest.

If you have ever been in this moment and cannot confess, Psalm 50 will bring you into Christ’s arms.
There is a point in everyone’s life where you have given in & you cannot continue. You think of yourself each day & feel shame. It spiritually aches. The Church offers you this memorization so that you always know this prayer & you always know Christ.
The West has tried to tell you that God is bloodthirsty. That he is angry w/ you & you have to beg Him to forgive you.

He has already done this. We must come home. That sin is bad & cannot be continued & it must be confessed, but please know that God loves you.
Why must we confess this if He already has forgiven me?

Because of love. Do you not love God? Do we not desire to ask for forgiveness for the loved ones we have grieved?
This is why we learn Psalm 50 by heart. Literally by heart means to memorize it. To know it. To cry out to Christ when we know we have pulled ourselves from Him. Not because of the inverse.
When Lent comes, we fall down before Christ & cry out Abba Father in the Church. We are a child in our both our Mother & Father’s arms simultaneously in this moment. They forgive us entirely, but we must cry out to them because they are so special to us.
If only we knew the way that Christ loves us. Fear of God should apply to the prideful. & if only we would all confess & admit our pride would we realize how close Christ is to us.

How much have I been prideful before Him? Before all of you? Before those I love? Endless times.
We do not ask God for Mercy for some kind of end to a “beating”. Psalm 50 is not this. Confession is not this. Being Orthodox is not for this. It is for love. We become Orthodox to be with Christ forever. To worship Christ forever. Because we love Christ & nothing less.
