While this is a topic of interest, here's some things I learned during 20+ years of being a birthright citizen advocating for better immigrant rights and access.
* I can't pass the citizenship test, even after practicing material with interviewees for 2 years
* Many undocumented immigrants entered legally, then stayed after a status lapse. Green card renewal, and many other resident status renewals are cost prohibitive. White undocumented immigrants often hide in plain sight because ... you better know why! 😉
* some states offer state IDs to ALL residents regardless of immigration status. I'm grateful WA is one such state. If you want to be in solidarity with your immigrant neighbors of any status, don't get the enhanced ID / license. Get the regular ID / license & your passport 💖
* Kr*s K*bach is a name you need to know if you want to look into policy influencing white nationalists trying to stop state-based benefits for immigrants including but not limited to state IDs, financial aid, etc.
* There is a quota system that dictates how many people from any country can apply for US citizenship. Most have years if not decades long waiting lists because their home country had few residents (or didn't exist yet!) when the quotas were made. There is also a cap.
* there are tons of rules that hinder a TENUOUS path to citizenship, including rules around leaving the country. You may have heard of a friend or colleague not being able to travel to a loved one's funeral and this is one possible reason why.
