Thread: This is a really interesting article from a number of fronts.
First, let's start with this piece:
"Ford didn’t elaborate on how it would spend the additional ~$10 billion toward electric vehicles in the next five years beyond what was previously mentioned."

and this piece:
"In order to support the volume production of electric vehicles, Ford is also going to have to secure battery cell supply."
Let's circle back to this article from December:

"Solid Power is in discussions with eight automakers but won’t have a contract until the technology is further along, Campbell said. The time line could move up to 2025 if there’s “extensive cooperation” from a car company, he said"

Domestic EV penetration is basically nothing right now. Most estimates say 2%. The growth potential is insane and if $F is serious about competing with $TSLA and others in the EV market, a joint venture with Solid Power would make a ton of sense to me.

I've always assumed Solid Power would go public. In fact I think it would be a big mistake for Solid Power not to take advantage of the excessive optimism in the markets right now and get that multi-billion dollar valuation by SPACing but....

...this piece is important:
"The startup doesn’t intend to seek the billions needed to build a factory from scratch -- it designed its batteries so they can be made in existing plants."

$F locking down Solid Power would legitimize them in the EV space.
A $F-Solid Power joint venture would be great but where does this all lead? Lithium but first another thought.

VW knows there is a massive opportunity with the EV penetration that is on the horizon in the coming years.
I'm sure $TSLA, $F, $GM, and a few of these others will all do real well but there is one massive issue.
A looming shortage of battery grade lithium.

It's great that billions of dollars are being thrown into EVs but there is a massive squeeze on the horizon when it comes to battery grade lithium supply.
This is where $LAC is laughing. Thacker Pass is the best known domestic asset and will be ready to produce by 2023.
