I’ll provide a short set of thoughts on creating separation in a career. I am decidely more management/strategy oriented, so not everything will track perfectly across disciplines.
At some point, I think talent is a bit overstated. As you progress in your career, raw talent converges quite a bit. Sure, there are Hall of Fame type talents, but they are pretty rare. At even the Director level, you tend to start to see people that have the same basic skills.
Having the same basic talent isn’t the same as people being equally capable. You can still create separation, and indeed, people definitely stand out. But why?
