Had the chance to chat with Sean Garrity in class today about why Winnipeg is such a unique city to set films in. Some key takeaways mixed with my own thoughts:
1.We're funny people. No seriously, we're not serious. Apparently you don't see this in other major Canadian cities. I always wondered why people in Montreal seemed so sedated. I think this is where the "friendly" in friendly Manitoba comes from. Winter w/o laughter would b hell.
2. We're one of the few places where you can't escape the people you meet. One day they will find you again. "oh you're from Manitoba? Do you know Mitchell from Winnipeg?" Yeah, I probably do. I have a feeling everyone lives with two degrees of separation here. Community thrives.
3. There's a sincere affection for the things we hate about this place. Everyone looks the same in a balaclava so you'll probably mistake a stranger for your friend. Bussing is horrible but use it as therapy. Call it what you want: Stockholm syndrome or Winnipeg fever.
4. Winnipeg is grossly misrepresented in media. We aren't the CMHR or the Forks or whatever that suspension bridge is. We are the shitty oak moulding and creaky wooden floors of every central apartment. We're beer, and whiteout parties, the street corner Pho kitchens.
