Everytime I hear @janicejackson promise schools are safe, I remember hearing very similar assurances back in 2016. One particular meeting, a number of us CTU sped teachers, clinicians, & support staff were at CPS HQs, pouring out our hearts to a group of CPS officials...
We told them the dangerous consequences of their changes to sped policies, saying clearly kids were going to be denied services, that kids could be HARMED as a result. Dr Jackson was there as the Chief Ed Officer. She was the top official in the room.
We told stories, brought data, gave presentations. CPS' blocks to getting vital services like paraprofessional support & extended school year were illegal. They were dangers. Please, we said, you can't do this. We TOLD them all this BEFORE their plan went into effect.
And they ignored us then just as they are ignoring us now. Gaslighting & reprimanding. Never listening. Everything is fine. Trust us.
And what happened to that bad, unsafe plan??

A child died. Drowned in a pool after his paraprofessional services were illegally removed.
10s of 1000s of students lost vital services.
Massive scandal for the city. Lawsuits.
The state had to take over CPS's entire sped program. A prog STILL under state monitor today.

So you see, it really doesn't matter what they SAY. What they promise. The sped scandal was just one of many.
CPS lies. They must lie to cover up the fact that motivations like austerity, union-busting, privatization, ableism, and racism are at the heart of all CPS policy.

We are in a global pandemic. No, I don't trust CPS to make decisions based on honesty. They have justified every single scandal, from schools closures to sped violations to this rushed, unsafe COVID reopening plan.
We do not trust CPS to keep us safe. Neither should you.
