lord of the rings characters as instruments - a very important thread
frodo baggins - piccolo. small, seemingly quaint, but extremely mighty. most effective in small doses, where he rises above all else.
samwise gamgee - viola. like a violin with a sturdier sound, one that constantly surprises you with its ability to support its other instruments while also having a virtuosic solo tone.
gandalf the grey - piano. somewhat of an obvious choice, but the piano is as mighty as it is tender. it can dominate the entire orchestra with a swift pound on the keys, but also mesmerize you with its elegance.
aragorn - cello. similar to gandalf/piano, the cello has one of the most versatile textural ranges of instruments. it can be mysterious, fervent, daunting, and aggressive, but its true power lies in its softness.
legolas - kalimba. soft spoken, elegant, graceful, its sound seemingly contains healing powers. its compactness allows you to take it wherever you go, and it will be your truest companion.
gimli - euphonium. a lesser known instrument as it’s commonly confused with its larger cousin the tuba, the euphonium has a deep, haunting, regal sound, one that seems as though it originated from deep within a mountain hall.
merry brandybuck - mandolin. delightfully folky, cheerful, and eager to accompany your voice. its sound alone makes you yearn to be happy.
pippin took - harmonica. it may be simple and somewhat unintuitive, but its pure sound fills your heart with love, and you don’t want to stop listening to it.
bilbo baggins - glockenspiel. similar to the piccolo, this instrument seems perhaps too small to accomplish a great sound, but a firm hit of mallets on the keys will ring in a room for eternity. portable, compact, and eager to play.
arwen - flute. often revered to be the most fair and graceful of winds, its sound could certainly control waves and show immense strength in the face of danger.
galadriel - harp. some say the harp is the most difficult instrument. it’s massive, and looms over its player, but rewards its audience with the most angelic noise they have ever heard. it has the ability to silence all and to move the earth.
boromir - bassoon. while boromir is a horn player, i think bassoon fits him better. seemingly large and intimidating, a honey-sweet sound is all this instrument can produce.
gollum - theremin. this nasty freak seems like he’s from another world, like the eerie haunting sounds of the electric theremin.
sauron - octobass. this instrument produces some of the lowest pitches possible for an acoustic instrument. it is daunting to play, and extremely massive. much of its history is somewhat mysterious.
saruman - pipe organ. few pipe organs exist in the world, and organists devote their life to their playing and preservation. they are massive, but delicate. their sound could penetrate ears from miles away.
elrond - clarinet. this instrument has a massive range of both pitches and textures, making it extremely unpredictable.
eowyn - oboe. many dismiss the oboe as they find its sound to be off-putting, but true masters of the oboe find its mystifying powers and strength.
theoden - french horn. regal, respected, beloved by many to be the true sound of triumph.
eomer - smooth, bold, produces an effective, iconic sound.
grima - harpsichord. perhaps it shined in its glory days, but it is a little too old-fashioned by modern music’s standards.
faramir - trumpet. a sound often equated with bravery, leadership, and nobility, all traits of faramir. can come off as harsh, perhaps, but wants to do what is right.
treebeard - marimba. immense, sings with the noise of hollow wood, the sounds of the forest.
denethor - kazoo. self-explanatory
