I’ll be tuning into this forum, which is about to start, and also, maybe, tweeting along. https://twitter.com/homeless_hero/status/1357397607581167623
. @homeless_hero welcoming the candidates, and noting how remarkable it is that mayoral candidates are taking part in a forum run by those directly impacted by homelessness
“If I could ask something of you it’s going to be this: tonight don’t give us the political spiel—don’t give us the campaign stuff....I can tell you one thing: people are looking for detailed answers.” @homeless_hero
First group of candidates to answer questions are @LoreeSuttonNYC, @KGforNYC and @mayawiley. @AndrewYang no longer participating due to his covid diagnosis.
The first question is about the tie between homelessness and systemic racism. Garcia doesn’t directly answers the question, but talks about how she could have easily ended up in the foster system as she was adopted.
Sutton also not directly answering the question

Wiley talking about her friend growing up whose family was evicted because they couldn’t afford the rent. Says homelessness crisis directly tied to affordability crisis.
. @homeless_hero asks how the candidates would change the system to end systemic racism
Garcia says she will invest in young people to break the pipeline to prison and homelessness. She says she’ll increase rent subsidy for permanent housing rather than temporary shelters
Wiley agrees, says shuttered hotels should be turned into affordable housing. Plugs New Deal New York to create jobs that will help people pay for housing in communities of color.
Sutton says she will listen and learn from @homeless_hero and other people experiencing homelessness to solve these problems
Next question comes from an undocumented person living in the shelter system, says voucher system doesn’t apply to her. How will candidates help?
Sutton repeats that she will listen and learn
Wiley talks about creating insurance for people who are undocumented
Garcia says the city could use its funds to pay for permanent housing and subsidies for these folks, and that it would be less expensive than shelters. Everyone agrees and commits to vouchers and subsidies applying to the undocumented
They all agree there should be much less time spent in shelters before people are moved into housing.
Next question: will you end practice of street sweeps?
