If you are as crazy about music as I am, have a look at some of these amazing musicians Iā€™ve been listening to here in Malawi. Malawian music is so beautiful and multifaceted. It's been so refreshing to hear new music and a new sound.
In no particular order...
This one makes me very emotional because Wambali Mkandawire passed away 5 days ago. He was a legend, an icon! Itā€™s difficult to place him in a genre because his sound was so versatile. But if I have to, I would say Afro-Jazz, World Music with a very strong Malawian flavour.
My favourite song of his is Nkhujipeleka. This album is available on Apple Music
The first time someone played me a Malawian song when I arrived here it was music from Lawi. I fell in love with the music instantly. Lawiā€™s voice is something special. He has that overall ā€œAfrican soundā€ that reminds me of Richard Bona but he still maintains his own identity in
in his music. You will hear some South Africanisms in some songs.
Erik Paliani is no stranger to South Africa. You might remember him from producing Zamajobeā€™s Ndawo Yami and playing those guitar hooks we still sing along to today. He also produced Hugh Masekela and played with numerous SA musicians including Benjamin Dube.
His album is called Chitukutuku. Check it out. Also, heā€™s a beast on the guitar!!!šŸ˜±
Patience Namadingo is a bit of an outlier who seems to be constantly pushing boundaries in his music. I love it! I would place his sound in Afro Pop, maybe Afro Soul.He also dips a bit into reggae. Beautiful voice as well. He sings with that beautiful desperation I enjoy in
in music. I canā€™t find an artist I can compare him to in SA but a collaboration between him and someone like Aubrey Qwana would be amazing.
