RIP Jim Weatherly, who had an amazing life -- QB on all-white Ole Miss SEC champion teams in the early '60s, then songwriter of Gladys Knight's three greatest: You're the Best Thing, Midnight Train, Neither One of Us. The ultimate trilogy of adult pop/R&B. A brief thread:
In order of greatness ... 3.
2. (The way Gladys swings her arms at the top of the second verse sums up the whole damn song.)
1. I can't imagine a more perfect match of a song and a singer.
No music has ever plumbed the emotions of grownup love and loss like '70s R&B. And no songs did it better than these three collaborations between a white songwriter from Ole Miss and a black singer from Atlanta. I'm not sure what that means. But it gives me a little hope somehow.
