I think:

a) Mourinho is not the right manager for Tottenham
b) Spurs should look to sell on Kane and Son before they try to force their way out of the club
Kane, Son, Lloris Ndombele and Hojbjerg are clearly strong talents. But it's increasingly clear that this team just does not have enough quality to win consistently the way Mourinho has them playing.
You can deal with this by overhauling the squad, getting a new manager or both. But the current squad is not destined to go anywhere meaningful.
One can look back and point to a lot of moments that went wrong but I look at

a) failure to buy Jack Grealish
b) missing out on Bruno Fenandes (not fair to dump on Lo Celso but BF is a different level of talent)
c) Not getting a proper CB this summer (Skriniar)
d) buying a bunch of players this summer that Mourinho praised but then went on to not use (Vinicius, Doherty)
e) Not cutting ties with Pochettino early enough (based on his comments, he checked out after the loss to Liverpool in the UCL final)
This isn't just a manager problem. There is clearly a talent deficit.

If Eric Dier and Ben Davies are your solutions, you're not trying to answer the right problems.
The problem with Mourinho is that Tottenham should be taking 3 points from teams such as Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Watford. As flawed a squad this is, Tottenham is better and should be winning, But Mourinho has this team set up like they are playing Bayern every week.
Mourinho himself has talked about how much offensive talent there is on this team. He is, however, getting very little out of them. And he has failed to stabilize this defense or get through to the likes of Davinson Sanchez to get him to play proper football.
The overdependence on Kane and Son for goals is not a new issue. Neither is the softness of the back four - there is no Spurs defensive back line who would start over anyone else among the other top 8 clubs in the league table now. These problems never got addressed.
Spurs fans were mostly just hoping that Mourinho's power of personality and credentials as a successful manager would help paper over these problems. Well, it did not work. And this is now a club that looks to be in decline at precisely the wrong moment.
If the club has to rebuild, then it needs to sell its best assets. Thenclun's best assets right now are Kane and Son - they would collectively net enough in proceeds for the Spurs to go out and get younger players with potential
Son and Kane are now also old enough that they will probably not want to stick around for another 4-5 year rebuilding project.
