What happens to your soul when you commit a mortal sin? Thread:
When we sin mortally, we destroy the supernatural grace of charity in our souls. This is the gift from God that allows us to love Him and others with a divine love. Without it, we are only capable of loving with a merely human love, which is good but weak and often selfish 1/
Supernatural charity is required to be united in love to God in the beatific vision; without it there can be no such union, hence if we die in this state we go to Hell. Also, without supernatural charity, it is impossible to merit grace & divine rewards by our good works 2/
However, Charity is not the only supernatural virtue we received at Baptism. We also have Hope and Faith, which we retain even in mortal sin as long as we don't specifically sin against them (for example, destroying supernatural Hope with the sin of despair) 3/
It is important to hold fast to these remaining supernatural virtues even (especially) when we are no longer in a state of grace, because they can help us to repent of our sin fruitfully: Faith holds us to a supernatural knowledge of God, and Hope makes us desire Him 4/
If we cooperate fully with God's grace in repenting, then when we receive absolution we will be restored to full spiritual health. If we repent imperfectly, we will restore supernatural Charity, but to a lesser degree than we had before we fell. But, if we repent with zeal... 5/
Hating our sins, and hungering for God with supernatural Faith and Hope, we can actually be raised by the grace of the sacrament of confession to a higher degree in the spiritual life than we were before we fell, bringing a greater good out of our original evil 6/
The devil does not want this, naturally, so after we fall he immediately tempts us to destroy Hope and Faith with despair, apathy, willful forgetfulness of God, delay of confession, acedia, and presumption 7/
Don't give in! If you sin mortally, hold fast to your little divine Faith and Hope, remember the pains of Hell, the wood of the Cross, the wounds & Precious Blood of Christ, repent with tears if you can, & you will not only be saved, you will be rewarded like the prodigal son 8/8
