School gave me the time, the network, and the motivation to continue with the work. The technical education was definitely not the best, but the connections I made and the experiences I had helped push me to where I am.
Other students can be some of the best resources you can get since y'all are struggling through the shit together. And beyond learning, having connections at different studios is helpful to get the inside scoop of what a place is actually like
Had my degree helped me? It helped me get a work visa in canada for my first job. That being said, the only reason I could afford school was some dope scholarships from my home state of VT as I'm the first to go to college in my family.
Things are definitely different now than 08-12 with the amount of mentorships, online schooling, and certificate programs available. But I know I wouldn't be where I'm at without the friends and connections that inspired, mentored, and pushed me along the way.
It's super easy to tell people just learn on your own, watch tutorials, etc. But I know that wouldn't have worked for me in the same way. I didn't have the discipline, or any idea where to even start.
