Episode 3, which looks at the National Prayer Breakfast, is called "New World Order," a conspiracy theorist's term embraced by the Prayer Breakfast's founder after WW II for his vision of a "Christian mafia" throughout gov't.
Biden spoke at today's National Prayer Breakfast, as has every president since Ike. Who agreed only as a political favor to Billy Graham, & warned against setting a precedent. For The Family, precedent was the point. What president thereafter could say no, as if *against* prayer?
In The Family on Netflix, we focused on Russian oligarchs' use of the National Prayer Breakfast as a backdoor to U.S. policy. The breakfast itself is only the public face of what amounts to a week long off-the-books unvetted lobbying fest.
The event itself is always bipartisan and deeply boring. That, too, is the point. "Anything can happen," reads a confidential planning document, "but Jesus is there, infiltrating the world"--through lobbying meetings in the hotel suites above.
This year, of course, it's virtual. No special sessions for the oil or defense industries, as in years past, or meet-&-greets w/ foreign defense ministers who are often quite candid about using the event to bypass the State Department.
Anyway, I've written two books and written about it for @harpers, @rollingstone, @motherjones, @newrepublic @cnn, @salon, & even the @nypost, and made a documentary series about it (really made, I should say, by brilliant director @djessemoss), so I'll say no more.
