THREAD: Wondering about the RPD-VCUPD MOU #RVACouncil is voting on 2/8? Here's some of reasons why we don't want increased data sharing among police:
Soma Global RMS uses predictive policing to expand surveillance in RVA
encourages joint operations
expands scope of policing

More reasons:
VCUPD already has a history of racially biased policing
lack of transparency about VCUPD-RPD jurisdictions AND oversight of campus police departments is a well-documented national challenge.

Less than 20% of the student population of @VCU is black and about 15% of the faculty population is black, yet black individuals accounted for more than 48% of the people arrested by VCUPD in 2019 for all offenses, and 51% for drug offenses. @studentpowervcu @VAstudentpower
A recent national study on the activities and behavior of campus police forces nationwide listed the increased arrests of black individuals at VCU starting in the early 2000s as one of the most notable trends nationwide. https://www.civilytics.com/publication/cpd-report/ @studentpowervcu @VAstudentpower
A record management system that uses predictive policing and “hot spot” approaches to policing, and which does not include community oversight, is bound to reinforce racist patterns of policing.
