I was really sorry to miss tonight's @privilegecafe_, on the proposed military museum in Cardiff Bay. I did the briefest bit of desktop research into their business model and it is based on WILD numbers.

the thread breaks for some reason - linking to some more frankly magical (*paid*) visitor projections: https://twitter.com/sara_huws/status/1338986396426645504?s=20
I think reflecting on this, and walking the site recently:

why isn't this collection going to the IWM? To Duxford?

Established memory institutions for military history - yknow, the ones people actually make a trip to visit, cause they're interested - they don't want it!
But yeah, I was doing a bit more audience research work today and crossed my mind again - especially in the context of 'saving' (ahem) the National Library (with money that was cut then returned in a grand gesture): there are some amazing museums and collections that deserve £££
The sector needs funding for e.g. genuinely diverse programming, meticulous behind the scenes work to make collections searchable, future-proof digitisation, digital infrastructure, funds to acquire 'once in a generation' objects that tell important stories - the list is long!
We've also moved so far past the 'glass case' museum, here in Wales and beyond. St Fagans won Museum of the Year for their collaborative approach to collecting! And this (paid, niche) museum thinks it can bring in 40% of what St Fagans (which is free) sees in a year.
