I'm tired of listening to conference sessions on Intellectual Freedom. I don't want to hear a discussion; I want to hear a brave & open debate that gives me the language and framing I need to support marginalized & vulnerable people in my community. 1/
I don't want to hear representatives of upper management justifying past decisions; I want to hear voices from the people who are most vulnerable (Indigenous, LGBTQ, etc.) to the harmful rhetoric affiliated with groups who promote hate, denial, and exclusion. 2/
I don't want to hear CEOs uplifting themselves for allowing banned books in their collections or drag queen story hours. I don't have any difficulty framing my support for these kinds of library initiatives. 3/
What library workers need & want is to hear about creative & preventative strategies/policies; and alternative perspectives that better support people from marginalized communities. Why aren't there speakers offering perspectives from Indigenous Law or Queer Theory? /fin
