Tonight’s the return of SpeakEasy—our speechwriting comedy show—with @thesquirrelnyc! It’s also the return of a curious phenomenon: the SPEAKEASY BUMP, where SpeakEasy guests go on to fame and fortune. We can’t take credit, but we’ll let the evidence speak for itself. Thread!
When @johnathanappel graced the SpeakEasy stage, he was “only” an esteemed New York humor writer. Now he’s a writer for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver—and just got nominated for a WGA Award! Coincidence? Probably, but we still think it’s cool!

We didn’t catapult @evavictor or @taylorgarron to Twitter fame. Nor did we bring them together as one comedy megaforce. But both Taylor and Eva performed at SpeakEasy in 2019...and then in 2020, released a book together. Just stating the facts, folks!
When @alexsongxia reenacted the graduation speech from Crazy, Stupid, Love at SpeakEasy, fatherhood was surely on her mind — but did she realize that in co-founding our new virtual venue, @thesquirrelnyc, she would become OUR dad? (She’s also a writer for Rick & Morty now.)
We can’t take credit for @karencheee becoming a writer for Late Night with Seth Meyers — she did that before doing SpeakEasy. But she did get her own segment, “What Does Karen Know?” after SpeakEasy. We can’t take credit for that either but that was the timeline!
Not to mention, @kchildsgraham and @Lpevs, whose future bosses— @VP and @LindaT_G—undoubtedly saw them take the stage at SpeakEasy and thought, “Yup. That strumming star? That movie maven? They’re gonna be my speechwriter.”
Tonight, @LukeVBurns, @JamesFolta, @andymvega, @Leah_Abrams, @jshaanhd, and @JordanaSophie become SpeakAlums. Where will the SpeakEasy bump propel them? Time will tell—but tune in at 9:30 PM ET so you can say you knew them beforehand!
