This week is National Gun Violence Survivors Week. 🧵

We honor gun violence survivors & their allies. Did you know the majority of American adults are actually gun violence survivors-either having experienced gun violence themselves or having a friend/family member who did? 1/
In my case, when I was a child, the boy next door, my friend, died by gun suicide. It was an immense tragedy that impacted his family, my family and our whole community. Since then I have learned that every year more than 600 children die by suicide with a gun. 2/
That’s more than 50 of our beautiful sons, daughters, neighbors and friends dying from suicide by gun every single month. To this day, I feel the trauma of that tragedy and I think about him and his family often. 3/

There are many things we can do to prevent gun violence. One of the most simple actions gun owners can take is ensuring their firearms are locked & stored properly. Take time TODAY to secure your firearms. 4/

We can all agree that any death by firearm is one death too many.

This week, during #NationalGunViolenceSurvivorsWeek, let's commit to working harder together to find common sense solutions to combat this terrible public health crisis.

We can and must do better.
