They didn't complete the next round as the IFA (Irish Football Association) judged the #Brandywell not up to standard for European games.

Despite the previous round having been played there.

The IFA were suspected of having sectarian motives for this decision

Following the Civil rights movement in 1969, a series of clashes with rival fans led the RUC to deem the Brandywell unsafe for visiting teams.

The club had no option but to relocate to Coleraine 30 miles away for their 'home' games

In 1972 facing dwindling crowds and financial dire straits the club apply to the league to be allowed return to the Brandywell.

Numerous attempts were vetoed by the other clubs in the League and in Oct 1972 they were effectively forced out.

Then followed 13 years in the 'Wilderness' when the club played in a local junior league and further attempts to rejoin the league were unsuccessful

In 1985 following special dispensation from FIFA and the IFA Derry successfully applied to join the League of Ireland (Republic of Ireland)

They beat #Homefarm 3-1 in the inaugural game

In 1987 they won the First Division and were promoted to the Premier Division

And in 1988 the reached their first ever FAI Cup final losing out to @DundalkFC after a very soft penalty.

They bounced back from that defeat and Jim Mc Laughlins men went on to secure an historic treble of League,FAI Cup and League Cup in the 88-89 season.
