I’m one of the founders & co-hosts of the #PrinceTwitterThread & today I am going to deliver my take on the awesome “Emotional Pump” from the #SOTTDELUXE release.

It’s one of my favourites & I would’ve loved it even more had @jonimitchell had the foresight to have covered it!
EP was Recorded on 16 Oct 1986 at Sunset Sound:

*a month after the final Parade Tour gig in Japan on Oct 7th 1986.

*a mere 9 days after P had disbanded The Revolution on 9th Oct 1986.

*It was the FIRST track he recorded after disbanding The Revolution.

Thanks @PrinceVault.
Emotional Pump (EP) is another holy grail song spoken about in mythical terms.

We wondered what it might sound like & how it might have been a fit for @jonimitchell.

It had been mentioned in fanzines & in the writings of Per Nilsen for decades - as per Uptown #5 July 1992 👇🏽
Well, Pers Nilsen was wrong☝🏽& eventually it did see the light of day!

It finally leaked in bootleg form some years back on “Blast From The Past 4.0” on Eye Records in 2017.

Albeit it’s conceivable that some of the ‘Elite’ had earlier bootleg versions from somewhere else!
And by the ‘Elite’, I mean people like @questlove who had it god knows how many years before it was leaked.

We know @questlove played it in full at a Revolution Aftershow on 3rd September 2016. I think its first ever filmed public performance anywhere?

The liner notes by @Duane_Tudahl confirm P wrote it specifically for Joni.

Joni greatly influenced Prince & all that you need to know about this ‘special relationship’ can be found in my Joni thread that ought to be read in conjunction with this one.

*My Initial reaction* - “this is for Joni - I don’t think so”.

After repeat plays & placing it in a Purple Context, finally I think I understood why P sent this to Joni.

The SOTT Deluxe master does EP a great deal more justice than the bootleg.

P sent EP to Joni but she didn’t think it matched her style.

She didn’t truly appreciate P’s vision for her & thus declined recording it & told P she couldn’t sing it.

But the essence of it is in this video👇🏽
I still can’t comprehend her rejection of it.

EP had a strong Bass line which Joni had been incorporating into her mid 70’s albums with the late & great #JacoPastorius contributing to such albums.

Listen 2 Jaco’s great Bass lines on Joni songs - Coyote, Hejira & Talk to Me 👇🏽
Also check out Jaco’s glorious Bass solo from Joni’s live album - “Shadows & Light” 👇🏽🎬

In 1979, Joni also recorded an album with legendary American Jazz Double Bassist - Charles Mingus!

So the Bass played an important role in her sound of the mid to late 70’s.
Everywhere I read about Joni & EP - I see a negative reaction to it.

Almost universally it is considered an unsuitable track for Joni’s style.

Some suggest that Power Fantasic would’ve been far more appropriate & I can certainly hear that in its jazz stylings & its lyrics.
However, I completely disagree that EP was an unsuitable track for Joni.

*It was perfect for her* - particularly in the mid 80’s - it could’ve been her biggest 80’s hit.

The 80’s & beyond were not her best years in comparison to the endless classics she produced in the 70’s.
So to understand my argument that this was a perfect hit for Joni we need to look at where she was in the 80’s - she was trying a new & different style but it didn’t quite come off.

The live album of 1980 - “Shadows & Light” was pretty epic but largely focused on the 70’s.
Joni followed that up with the most decent effort of the 80’s “Wild Things Run Fast” in 82’ which was largely inspired by bands such as The Police & Talking Heads.

Next - “Dog Eat Dog” in 85’ - arguably the worst of her 80’s output with synth-pop producer Thomas Dolby.
“Dog Eat Dog” moved more in the direction of an 80’s synthetic pop sound & on which she played no guitar. It wasn’t memorable but it showed that she was willing to ‘experiment’.

In between “Dog Eat Dog” & her next album in 1988 - “Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm” - P had written EP.
“Chalk Farm” included a great guest cast of Wendy & Lisa, T Petty, @itspetergabriel , Willie Nelson, Don Henley, B Orr (Cars) & ....Billy Idol!!!

Can it get any weirder than that!

But EP wouldn’t have suited this album at all as it was more rooted in a mature AOR soundscape.
EP was a far superior track to all of the songs that appeared on these 80’s albums.

It could’ve been released in 87’ after the experimental “Dog Eat Dog” or as a stand alone single in the hiatus between “Chalk Farm” in 88’ & her next album in 91’ - “Night Ride Home”.

[Fan Art]
Joni could even have created a more PC alter ego than the hipster - Art Nouveau & released it under a new pseudonym which would’ve created a buzz & an air of mystery around it & a Joni REBIRTH!

Imagine that - Joni’s new PC alter ego releasing a song by P - King of alter ego’s!
A stand alone single which would have been an EVENT per se.

No album or tour to promote - the spotlight would have been on EP, on P & on Joni’s Rebirth.

If Joni had recorded & released EP during this period, I’m sure it would have been a smash on both sides of the Atlantic.
EP might’ve briefly resurrected her career & I could imagine an extended Bass driven 12” version destroying all the dance floors in the 80’s.

It could’ve been her 1st major hit on Black Radio 10 years before Janet Jackson’s “Got 'Til It's Gone”.

P could have been Joni’s Nile!
@nilerodgers had created success for a clutch of artists in the 80’s.

He kick started @Madonna’s career on Like A Virgin.

Resurrected @DavidBowieReal w/ Let’s Dance & @CarlySimonHQ with “Why” which altho’ originally released in 82’ re-emerged as a Balaeric dance hit in 89’.
P’s vocal delivery on EP has a kinda #SuzanneVega “Tom’s Diner” vibe - a big hit in 90’ with the DNA remix.

I could see a Joni version of EP sitting in between these kinds of songs:

“Why” & “Tom’s Diner” - both were huge hits.

EP could have competed in this head space.
It could have changed the direction of her career encouraging a more dance/funk approach rather than the safe mediocre soft rock/synthetic pop direction she ended up navigating.

Joni said she “liked (intelligent) dance music”!

EP was perfect - dance music with intelligence!
Perhaps, Joni might’ve turned down every P song during that era?

Was she closer to @wendyandlisa? - she invited them & not P as guests on Chalk Farm.

Perhaps, she was upset about how the @therevolution were disbanded & W&L ‘seemingly’ cast aside?

Maybe she just didn’t dig EP?
To say EP didn’t fit her vibe is (to some degree) to misunderstand who Joni was in the 80’s.

EP evidences P as a *Visionary* - way ahead of Joni & indeed of ‘time’.

EP shows P’s unique approach to song-craft, which often the artist (they were intended 4) couldn’t comprehend.
“EP,” is built on punchy P-Funk & Latin tinged ‘Miami Sound Machine’  horn riffs from Leeds & Bliss which in part also remind me of “A Love Bizarre” by Sheila E.

A great 80’s leading synth riff.

But the one instrument that really stands out is THE BASS.

Ole skool Slap Bass!
A Bass style invented by the one & only @GrahamLarry “LG” whose career has included 👇🏽

60’s - Sly & Family Stone
70’s - 80’s - Graham Central Station
Mid 70’s - Betty Davis
70’s - Tower of Power
80’s - Solo
1997 - 2000 - Prince
1998 - GCS2000 album with Prince
The ‘Slap Bass’ style which @GrahamLarry invented - he infamously called:

*Thumpin' & Pluckin!*

You can hear him talk about this innovation here in a 2 part video.

You should watch both parts in full as *LG* is so cool the way he tells his story:

Part 1 👇🏽
I mean not only is he a Bass God but he also epitomises “Swag” & so is it any wonder that P was totally in awe of him!

He is one cool MF’!

Part 2 of @GrahamLarry on his unique Bass playing style👇🏽
Another amazing fact about Larry Graham apart from his Bass playing,   collaborating with & supporting P on tour & introducing him to the Jehovah Witness faith- is that he is @Drake’s Uncle!

That kinda astonished me when I found out this!
If you want to hear more from the man himself, here’s a great @peach_and_black podcast on the man who should simply be referred to as “LG” - Legend!

Highly recommended listening as are all Peach & Black podcasts - an essential guide on all things Purple:
Sly's “Thank You” featuring LG is thought to be the first ever recorded instance of the ‘Slap Bass’ technique.

It features in this great Bass Playlist covering a gamut of genres from Funk 2 Jazz 2 Pop 2 Indie 2 Rock & other Bass Gods: @Bootsy_Collins https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5sahA2iO2NtxJKxL0jMSyF?si=_mU-gq0ITViiqmf1bVGIAQ
In addition to LG & the great tracks in the above Emotional Pumpin’ Bass playlist which include many P favourites, there’s this absolute gem - “Glide” by Portland’s #Pleasure which was a big dance hit in the 70’s!

Nathaniel (aka Nate) Phillips on the Bass.
P performed “Glide” live a couple of times in 2004 during Musicology Aftershows.

He performed it once at Paisley Park on 17th June 2004 which you can hear below & another time at the House of Blues in Chicago on 25th July 2004.
Here’s someone P was smitten by early on in his career & he even offered her “I Wanna Be Your Lover” & “Feel For You”.

Not only did she reject these tracks but also his advances.

Freddie Washington on Bass on this #PatriceRushen song - sampled on MIB & G Michael’s Fast Love.
And of course P highly rated Ida of @3RDEYEGIRL - one of his last great Bass players.

Just listen to this - this girl knows how to SLAP 👋🏼💥

@idanielsenbass
‘Slap Bass’ also made an important transition into Rock in the late 80’s pioneered by musicians such as @flea333 from the RHCP who also worked on Clinton’s Paisley Park album ‘Hey Man... Smell My Finger’.

Here Flea talks about how Funk inspired him & his work with the 🌶 🫑’s!
And #LesClaypool from @primus also pioneered the ‘Slap Bass’ transition into Rock.

Primus once appeared with P (as support act) at Heineken Music Open'er Festival in Poland during his Welcome 2 America: Euro Tour 2011.

Here is Les giving us some blistering live ‘Slap Bass’ 🔥
Journo Ben Newman identified the Bass pitch as 1 of P’s original compositional traits.

He tells us how he used it more as as a percussive element to emphasise the drum beat & less as a harmonic tool.

But how (unlike other funk artists) P did not rely on the ‘Slap Bass’ groove.
The Bass occupies an important & memorable part in EP recalling other great Bass tracks in P’s cannon - featured here in this playlist for y’all to dig into.

Black Album is not on streaming platforms - we need a BlackSexy SD  - Lovesexy & Black Album! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7buYaDbaxNANUcyAakxU9Q?si=l8Nw3FdURvCtBk8km8fK_Q
Here’s a montage of some great video footage & audio of P’s expert Bass chops on tracks like Partyman, FIML, What’s My Name & Get Wild.
Here also is great footage of the last Bass P ordered from a guy who learned his craft in my neck of the woods - the West Midlands, U.K.!

P ordered it before his transcendence but sadly he did not live long enough to receive it.

Here’s a comprehensive run down of the Bass Guitars P used throughout his career on this brilliant site worth exploring in full: https://equipboard.com/pros/prince-guitar/gear/bass-guitars
One of my all time favourite anecdotes about P & the Bass is probably the most infamous one.

The one where it was said P was being a “meanie” & ‘playing the Bass in Michael Jackson’s Face’!

As retold by @iamwill & name-checking P’s former manager @ruthlesdva

Dis cracks me up
@ruthlesdva kindly gave me a brief lowdown on what happened during this infamous incident.

She has more to say about it & I hope one day soon she will have the opportunity to elaborate upon this legendary story in a book 🙏🏽

🚨 Exclusive🚨

👇🏽A piece of untold Purple History 🔥
EP has musical & lyrical links to another P track - 17 Days.

Both have a heavy Bass leaning.

Both mention falling rain & loneliness.

In both the protagonist is a ‘needy’ person.

Both have a similar spoken word part at around the same timestamp in each respective song👂🏽👇🏽
So what about the lyrics!

There’s a Joni kookiness in the lyrics below which hark back to Joni songs like Talk To Me & Help Me.

To me, they are 💯 Joni-like lyrics.

I can imagine Joni singing these lines, it sounds incredible in my head - I can hear what P could hear too!
The above lyrics☝🏽I first saw in Uptown fanzine issue #33 recalled by #SusanRogers in a piece by Pers Nilsen in 98’.

My mind exploded when I saw these lyrics & for years I tried to imagine what these lines might sound like on the song.

I really wish she had recorded this song!
Of course we know “stargazing” was a very Joni-like thing to do & it was a subject matter that defined one of her most iconic songs “Woodstock”.

“We are stardust
 We are golden“

Stardust - a mass of distant stars appearing as tiny particles of dust!
The Talk to Me lyrics below👇🏽demonstrate that as far back as the 70’s Joni was unafraid to express herself openly & freely & sexually.

So the lyrical content of EP including the chorus should have been no biggie for her.

The “silent mystery” in this song is reputedly Bob Dylan!
Joni was in mind when P wrote this & so did he view her as a substitute mother like in the lyrics below?

Did P want Joni to mother him?

Perhaps, the younger man in the song is P & he imagines a scenario where Joni (as a cougar) is pining over him?

A case of wishful thinking?
Is EP a metaphor for a *Beating Heart* - of being in love .. of breathing life into a loved one - making him/her/them feel A.L.I.V.E.!

Your mother’s heart beat stimulates U before & after birth - offering comforting riddims - a reason why we react to musical riddims?
The emotional heart is a metaphorical place for feelings & emotions- especially those connected w/ love.

The heart changes its beat when feelings/emotions change.

Excitement & love speed up the heart rate.

Fear & passion, etc change the heart’s riddims.

EP = Beating Heart?
Cruder interpretations translate EP as P’s Love Organ & it could be that too!

In the lyrics below, when employed correctly, the Love Organ is one way in which to bring another to an orgasm- an orgasm makes one’s body jump & cry!

Thus giving her the satisfaction she is craving!
So I hope you have been persuaded that EP could have been a perfect fit for Joni in the mid-late 80’s.

I mean she was influenced by bands like The Police & Talking Heads.

She was working with artists like T Dolby & Billy Idol - listen to ‘Dancing Clown’ & tell me I am wrong!
So, in my humble & seemingly minority opinion EP:

*was a perfect for Joni & a missed opportunity
*could have been a hit on both sides of the Atlantic in the 80’s
*has one of the strongest Bass lines P ever committed to tape

And like me, I hope you can hear Joni singing it!
A final thing.

When P got stage fright he’d retreat 2 his candlelit, incense scented dressing room, drink herbal tea & listen to Joni.

As recalled below by Wally @Wallysafford1 👇🏽

😎Wally, where'd you get those glasses? Those are the freakiest glasses I've ever seen
