Have you ever looked up a specific stat and then just sat back and
I'm a little ashamed I hadn't noticed this before, since what I'm looking at isn't necessarily new.
So.. I'm doing a video on LeBron James's surge from behind the 3pt arc. And of course, I can't help but notice his Free Throw % is lower than a typical 40% shooter from 3
That's when I turned to @Stathead to look up how many players have ever turned in seasons with 40% from three (5 attempts/game minimum), but less than 72% from the free throw line
There have been 6 players who have taken at least 5 three's a game, shot over 40%, but then hit less than 72% from the free throw line in the NBA ever.
Nick Anderson did it (he missed crucial FTs in a 94 playoff game, never recovered his stroke) in 1994-95. Chuck Person did it the next year in 95-96. JR Smith did it TWICE in 07-08 and 15-16 (weirdly long gap)
but here's where it gets a little shocking. Of course, we know LeBron James is shooting 41% from three and 71.8% from the line this year. Al Horford is also nailing 42.6% of 3's and hitting merely 71.4% of this free throws.. BUT... the next name.........
Having only seen 4 players in the history of the NBA ever shoot better than 40% from 3 and worse than 72% from the line before this season, we have THREE players doing it this season alone. The 3rd player (after LBJ, Horford) is....
JOE HARRIS
JOE HARRIS
And to make matters even MORE shocking, Harris did this already for a whole season last year. In 69 games in 19-20, he shot 42.4% on 5.9 attempts, and hit 71.9% of his free throws (1.3 a game)
This year, he is making a run at 50% from three - something that hasn't been done on high volume ever (more than 5 3PA/game) yet, he's CLANKING his free throws at 61.5% (WUT) He takes 0.6 a game, but STILL
