This is a really interesting thread, but it relies too much on a mind/body duality model of the self for my taste. The brain in a jar thing falls apart for me because I'm not a brain. I'm all of me. Gender identity exists within the brain, yes, and it is a pretty concrete thing (even concretely fluid for some), but your brain doesn't exist in isolation. Talking about hypotheticals of removing brains and putting them is all well and good, but it's untestable.

That's not to say that anything in the thread is wrong, just that from a philosophical/world view stand point, I personally don't like theories of gender, identity, the self that rely on mind-body duality.
