Today's Covid update suggests we are indeed past the peak in terms of deaths.

But there is also bad news - more people died of Covid-19 in the city region during January than in any previous month.
This is, essentially, the consequence of the Christmas mixing that saw cases surge and our hospitals become overwhelmed with Covid patients.

Relaxing restrictions for that day, combined with the new variant and the lax Tier 2 restrictions has proved extremely deadly.
Cases are still coming down, which is good, although it still seems like the rate of decline is slowing down a bit - we'll have to watch what happens in the next few days to know whether that's right or not.
The further good news is that we are now seeing patient numbers decline as well, reflecting the fall in admissions we saw last week.

There are still a lot of sick people in hospital - and a lot of very sick people in ICU - but the numbers are coming down.
That will mean less pressure on hospitals and fewer deaths from Covid, so we are headed in the right direction and the vaccine will help us get there faster.

But there's still a very long way to go, so don't expect an end to lockdown just yet.
