Right now, I’m struggling with the reality that I’m at a university that is so committed to keeping our heads down and avoiding controversy that it’s impossible for us to have a meaningful mission or moral center. 1/
I mean, we’ve got the word “Christian” right there in our name, which should immediately invoke notions of justice and righteousness. But we keep getting the message not to speak up, not to push back at the powerful or corrupt. 2/
Those who speak up are told to calm down. Don’t poke the bear. Why are you so frickin’ angry? Our only goals seem to be to maintain an uneasy status quo, leave the powerful alone, and maybe win some football games. 3/
I guess I hoped or expected more from an institution like this. We should be able to seek justice, speak truth to power, and aim to enable our institution and our students to be drivers of good change in our world. And not be labeled problems or hung out to dry for doing it. 4/
I still think it’s worth fighting that fight. We lead by our example. I’ll never forget the admin who told me, after I lost yet another battle on principle, when we both knew what was right, “I can’t climb up on that white horse with you.” 5/
I’m staying on the white horse. My tenure and privilege, as well as my faith, demand that I do. And yeah, the gaslighting and silence that speaks volumes from admins, it does make me a little frickin’ angry. /end
