GM's new EV ad is entertaining for sure. But it also:

1⃣Discourages carpooling

2⃣Promotes misplaced American exceptionalism

3⃣Disregards GM's decades undermining climate science & pollution regs

4⃣Fails to note Norway's success is due to progressive taxes & policies

2/n:1⃣ and 2⃣pretty much speak for themselves. @AlexCKaufman hits 1⃣ on the head: https://twitter.com/AlexCKaufman/status/1357132938102661121?s=20
3/n: On3⃣, the ad doesn't mention that, from opposing basic science in the 80-90s (e.g. as a member of the climate-denying Global Climate Coalition), to opposing tougher auto-standards until Biden got elected in Nov 2020, GM has been attacking climate/energy policy for decades.
5/n: On 4⃣, GM pin responsibility on consumers to decarbonise transportation. What they neglect is that, as Sharpe & Lenton (2020)'s recent study concluded, EV's "tipping point" in Norway has been "clever and progressive tax incentives". The very stuff GM has opposed for decades.
7/n: So as entertaining as the GM ad unquestionably is, I'll take EV ads that bury fossil fuels over those that 'beat' Norway. https://twitter.com/GeoffreySupran/status/1319279210016378885?s=20
8/n: P.S. To be clear, electric cars can absolutely save Americans (and Norwegians) cash and carbon over their lifetimes. Our MIT study & app show how: https://twitter.com/GeoffreySupran/status/1350206820380516355?s=20
