Tactical Cam: Bonus Edition.
Before we start, let’s remember:

→ Many, if not all, our players performed well. This is not to say one was better than the other.

→ This would be a highlight of the progress three players have made in *particular* qualities they have improved/excelled in.

Let’s dive in.
PLAYER I: Luke Shaw.

On the ball — Shaw contributed massively to Manchester United’s build-up and progression.

This came by offering himself as an option on the ball in both the half-spaces *and* wide channels, allowing #MUFC to penetrate the penalty box and push forward.
Taking a look at the territory he occupied — we have two important observations:

→ He primarily remained wider and acted as a facilitator to #MUFC attacks, spreading the pitch.

→ He was very involved both outside and inside the box well — through overlaps/underlaps/crosses.
EXAMPLE:

His passes both inside and outside the box were very valuable as they allowed #MUFC to transition to their offensive phase quickly.

In addition to that — Look at his ball carries and how they allowed him to penetrate the penalty box with (3!) players on him.
EXAMPLE:

In the first — he picks out the space and bypasses SOU’s backline. Perfectly weighted.

The second begins with him driving forward and, again, offering himself as an option on the ball.

Shaw’s spatial awareness makes him very good at picking out players i.e Cavani.
Perhaps an overlooked but important fundamental to his performance was his movement.

He constantly positions himself to offer himself as an option, from the edge of the penalty box to the flanks, to the box in just 13 seconds!

His involvement in our attacks has improved.
PLAYER II: Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

I’ve placed both pass maps to show that his recent offensive proficiency is in fact improving, rather than one-off.

His role as an auxiliary in buildup allowed #MUFC to exploit and using width, finding the inside passes to our midfield & forwards.
The territory he occupied in both matches conveys two important points:

→ His involvement out wide allowed #MUFC to exploit SOU’s narrow structure.

→ Advancement up the pitch by offering himself as a passing option to progress the ball and penetrate the opposition box.
An ingredient to AWB’s recent attacking productivity is his runs. We saw this against ARS as well.

Run and you will receive — and that he did.

His runs were fundamental i.e his goal as he escapes his marker and makes a blindside run and i.e create space by dragging a defender.
We can see two different #MUFC can utilize AWB for penalty box entries:

(A) Pushing forward, beating the front post defenders with an excellent low driven cross to Cavani.

(B) Finding him when positioned out wide — and again, acting as a direct threat using his crosses.

PLAYER III: Mason Greenwood.

A deficiency of Mason’s “game” is his lack of involvement in either build-up or progression —

but here, and in many games before, he has improved in moving the ball forward and infield, and finding runners into the penalty box.
Looking at the territory he occupied — we can see:

(A) He interchanged between the right and left flanks to support attacks.

(B) He was an important contributor to creation in the opposition half — by holding width, supporting AWB and drifting centrally to lay off the ball.
EXAMPLE:

He was productive in movement *but* chose the right time to make a run or cover for AWB.

When he did, he ran into space, creating opportunities for himself/others & retained the ball well.

His assist began with making a short run blindside to the defender.
EXAMPLE:

Mason didn’t rush with the ball — bur was rather mature in terms of finding his teammates in space, retaining AND recovering possession well.

He was able to find our runners in the penalty box twice into dangerous areas. Improving his creative output.
There’s a reason I’ve picked these three particular players. Take a second to think about it.

That is: their *off the ball movement* massively contributed to all of #MUFC’s offensive phases, showing progress in their weaknesses.

...and END.

hope you enjoyed it. (◔◡◔)
