Two related questions on this for Nick, Kevin, & others reporting on the story: (1) Did this development blindside the Biden Administration? I’m hearing ‘no,’ which makes sense given the backstory: MX passed a lauded new law in Nov largely ending immigrant family detention. 1/ https://twitter.com/nickmiroff/status/1357133223776702465
That’s the main reason why MX is no longer taking back Central American families expelled by US under Title 42. AMLO is AMLO & is erratic; bilateral relations aren’t great right. But this news—while **hugely** complicated for Biden Admin—isn’t coming out of nowhere, right? 2/
And that leads to the second (and inevitable) question. (2) To what degree will there be a correspondingly aggressive effort made by Mexico at its own southern border to block/turn away Central American migrants arriving there?
