I think blue to purple is the most awkward transition.

White belt is all about survival. That's it.
Purple about effectiveness and doing what you do best
Brown belt is about domination
Black belt is about efficiency

Blue though... You're still an amateur (Sorry but you are)
You're still figuring things out and you're still surviving.

You don't really know what you're doing yet but you're getting better at it.

Some things are working more than others but overall, there's no clear path.

I think what gets lost is that at the blue belt
Your job is to switch from defensive to offensive

By this point, you need to start developing a clear focus and identity (A "Game" if you will) that has hither-to poked itself out from time to time.

This belt is the exact on-the-mat definition of the Bruce Lee axiom:
"Adapt what is useful, discard what is useless and add what is uniquely your own".

The existential crisis blue belts face has to do with not understanding that the blue belt is the time to stop trying to be a sponge but rather, focus on the things you're doing well.
Learn it all... but at the same time, experiment with everything and nurture what's working.

Continue being an expert survivalists but also, start figuring out who you are on the mats.

Once that gets established, purple belt becomes much clearer.
