Just caught part of your radio show in the car, @theJeremyVine, and one of your callers misled you.
They suggested the current #Brexit problem in NI was limited to Larne, and that all cargo should be redirected via Belfast.
Nothing could be further from the truth. 👇
1/..
The problem is Loyalist Paramilitaries are now involved.
They've decided their voice should be heard, much the same way as Sinn Fein & most of UK media amplified threats from the IRA during the past 4 years.
Precedent was set 2016-2020.
2/..
There was graffiti & threats at Larne, and also at Belfast (seen by the graffiti on a DUP office).
Larne Paramilitaries, whilst capable of addressing "local" issues independently, would not be acting on "national" issues alone. Not to this extent.
3/..
These will be co-ordinated higher up the pecking order, and Belfast would be at the heart of that.
Belfast paramilitaries would have more capability, and are more prone to 'extreme' violence than Larne would tend to be.
Larne wouldn't commit without agreement from above.
4/..
So, to "divert to Belfast" could exacerbate the problem, not fix it.
Your caller, like most people here, displayed a bias.
They showed it when they called Larne a "loyalist stronghold".
Yes, it would be viewed as such, even in NI, but not to the extent of parts of Belfast.
5/..
The problem will not go away by cutting out Larne.
It will get worse.
Someone needs to sit down with political & possibly paramilitary reps to get agreement on what *is* acceptable & what will take to calm things down.
We do it daily with SF/IRA & nobody bats an eyelid 🤷‍♂️
