GW23 Liverpool v City Analysis

Looking into the history of this game along with form makes it difficult when deciding who to play out of the assets that I'm sure most of us own so I'll cover the history, teams, then the players & my personal outlook

Here's the history. Since 1989 these 2 have played 32 times at Anfield. In this time City have only managed 1 win back in 2003. Liverpool won 19 times & there have been 12 draws. Liverpool scored in 31, only once back in 2018 has there been a 0-0. Here are the results;

2/21
Liverpool

Liverpool obviously have their injury problems & just came off a 1-0 defeat at Home to Brighton. Brighton do have 1 of the best defensive stats this season though so for some Liverpool not scoring wasn't a shock.

3/21
They haven't been on a great run however still pulled 2 big results out against Spurs & West Ham in recent games. Will 1 of the new CBs play against City, I'd think so & there is a good chance it'll be Kabak who could be paired alongside Fabinho who is expected to be back.

4/21
Will Mane recover in time for the game is another question? Write Liverpool off at your peril is always a relevant thing to consider.

5/21
Man City

After a slow start City have began to look back to their best even without star man Kevin De Bruyne. With Dias/Stones pairing up at the back they have looked formidable & have only conceded 1 goal in their last 10 Premier League games.

6/21
Cancelo has added an extra dimension to the team allowing the like of Gundogan to have more attacking freedom which has resulted in some very impressive performances. Having a striker fit in Jesus has also benefitted them in recent games as it has given them a focal point

7/21
2 goals & 2 90 min run outs for the Brazilian. As ever Pep could pick any starting 11 v Liverpool so expect the unexpected.

Outcome

Even with the poor history at Anfield you'd be crazy not to favour a City win in this game although I can see there being goals for both sides.

Popular Players

TAA/Robertson - same as ever for these 2, both capable of attacking outputs although over last 8 Robbo has none & Trent has 2 (1 goal, 1 assist)

10/21
Salah - form has been hit & miss this season. Looked good against Spurs & had a goal ruled out by VAR & a double v West Ham. Had a couple chances v Brighton but was kept at bay. Always has the potential to grab a goal. Returning a goal/assist every 99 mins this season.

11/21
Dias/Stones - In the 12 games they have been paired together in league they have 11 clean sheets & only conceded 1 goal. I wouldn't risk playing both as I expect city to concede due to their historic struggles at Anfield. Liverpool scored in 31 of last 32. 0-0 the anomaly

12/21
Cancelo - has helped transform cities style this season & coincides with the improved performances. Usually playing RB when defending but when in control of the ball moves into central midfield. Always a threat although his output is lower than expected.

13/21
Only so long before he starts to grab those assists/goals. Out of all the city defenders he'd be the 1 I'd prioritise this game due to his position & attacking output opportunities.

14/21
Gundogan - a benefit from cancelo in the team he has had more attacking freedom. On set pieces/pens which could be valuable. 7 goals & 1 assist in his last 9 league games. Biggest concern for me has been Pep's use of Gundo away from home against the big teams this season.

15/21
The 2 league games he's been dropped have been Spurs & United away. He was also dropped for the semi final of cup away to Arsenal where even without Kdb Pep favoured the double pivot of fernandinho/rodri with bilva in the attacking role. Same double pivot he used v united.

16/21
Away to Chelsea & United (cup) however he used Gundo, but both games he played alongside KdB & without a striker. This could be the reason for no double pivot as City had an overload of interchangeable midfielders.

17/21
I have a feeling the midfield pivot returns at weekend with Bilva playing the attacking role & Gundo on the bench but anything can happen with Pep.

18/21
Sterling - since joining city he's had generally a tough time v his old club. In 14 games he's managed 2 goals & 3 assist. Not having his best season I'd expect him to still start. But with his in & out of team this year he could easily return to the bench

19/21
Final thoughts

I'm expecting a game where both teams score. Midfield/Attack options for both seem like great options but be prepared for possible rotations. Out of the defensive options Cancelo would be my stand out pick.

20/21
Robbo/TAA both aren't bad picks due to potential in attack. I'd likely stick away from centre backs from both teams, Liverpool more so than City. Dias/Stones & City's general defensive performances can easily create an argument to play.
