Our job as citizens is to hold the government accountable, regardless of who is in office. Blind faith in any administration is a dangerous mistake. And delaying ethics reforms means never pursuing them because presidential administrations don’t get *more* ethical over time. /3
Why does it matter? Ethics rules aren’t mere protocol or a matter of polite manners. Ethics can mean life and death, and they matter most when they’re the most inconvenient: in a crisis. Do you want officials fighting to save your lives or trying to enrich themselves? /4
The answer is obvious. That’s why the public needs access to copies of ethics records like ethics waivers. A waiver is a document that says an official can ignore an ethics rule. There can be good reasons for waiver, but we need to see the waivers to judge them for ourselves. /5
