A lot of yall are discovering Miami. Welcome! And please, come explore where the rest of us live. Hanging with other rich folks on the beach is not making you smarter about the scope of challenges you will face or the opportunities you can leverage here.
Explore beyond your comfort zone. Try your bad Spanish. Spend time in Little Havana, la saguesera, Overtown, Little Haiti, North Miami, Homestead, Kendall, unincorporated Dade, etc. If you hire, most of your people live out here and have very different perspectives on our city.
Miamians are entrepreneurial and resilient af. Many, if not most, natives came from families that lost everything to brutal dictators and made legacies from nothing. They survived drug wars, giant hurricanes, insane growth. They build. They protect each other. They find a way.
Our people and communities are enormous assets. Imagine what they could do with equitable access to resources and training, capital and networks? With housing security and transit? A more diverse economy? Aggressive leadership on climate resilience? We’d be unstoppable.
We can do it, but we have to be broader, commit to equity, elevate community leaders, cut the happy talk, get focused and work harder on structural barriers. We have to collaborate to spread opportunity. We can make a difference if we “build with not for.” First, let’s learn.
