41 lessons I've learned on my entrepreneurial journey
(inspired by the @vizovisek 21st birthday thread)
///THREAD
1. Learn from the people who are 1-2 steps ahead of you, and always help the people who are 1-2 steps behind you.
2. Support other people's ventures. It will mean the world to them.
3. Working a lot of hours doesn't mean that you are a hard worker.
4. No one is watching your every move. Remember that.
5. There's no need to reinvent the wheel, but there's massive upside if you can.
6. It's okay to have "shiny object syndrome" early on, but rein that shit in quickly.
7. Be real with yourself about your lifestyle goals. Not everyone wants to be in charge of a massive business.
8. Ideas don't come fully formed, they develop over time.
9. Use your 9-5 to fund your side hustle. When your side hustle can pay your most basic bills then you can choose if you want to put in your notice.
10. Mentors and courses can speed up the learning process, but don't use them as a crutch to be lazy. Learn to think for yourself.
11. Not everyone is cut out for this life. If you find yourself constantly thinking about the security of your 9-5 you might want to have an honest conversation with yourself.
12. Don't be cheap.
13. Treat your VAs and gig workers like human beings. Ask them about their life and give bonuses when appropriate. They aren't f*cking robots.
14. Burn out is real. It doesn't mean you're weak. It means you're human.
15. Network with people who are also on the entrepreneurial path. They don't have to be doing exactly what you are but you need people around who understand the struggle.
16. Reward yourself for a job well done. When you deserve a pat on the back give one to yourself.
17. Identify the activities that bring you the highest ROI and go all-in on them.
18. Pick and choose your platitudes. Hustle culture can provide motivation but can also be extremely toxic.
19. Don't give up right before you strike gold, but also don't keep throwing good money at bad. It's a delicate dance.
20. Money is everywhere. Adopt an abundance mindset.
21. Act as-if. A broke mindset can cripple your chances of ever finding success.
22. You can't be an ace at everything. Know your weaknesses and pay an expert to take care of the things that aren't in your wheelhouse.
23. Learn how to tune out the static. The more successful you become, the more static there is. Keep your eye on the prize.
24. Keep tabs on your competition but don't obsess over their every move.
25. Scared money don't make money. Take calculated risks, and every now and then take an uncalculated one.
26. Create then iterate. Don't be a person who lives in the "idea phase".
27. Find your niche audience and speak directly to them. They are the ones who will pay your bills.
28. Keep track of time. Once you are your own boss the days, weeks, and months can blend together.
29. Develop a basic day to day routine that works for you and stick to it. If you start to feel that you are becoming unproductive then revise it.
30. Do things that make you feel uncomfortable. This is how you grow.
31. There's a real chance your friends and family won't understand your choices. It's OK that they don't. Remember, it's kind of a weird world we choose to live in.
32. Come up with a solid elevator pitch for what you do. People will ask and saying "uh..well..it's tough to explain" makes them feel uncomfortable.
33. Don't hero worship. The person who seems to have it all together might just be better at marketing themself than you are.
34. Don't become a prisoner of the moment. When making big decisions ask yourself "Is this macro, or is this micro?" and act accordingly.
35. On social media everyone portrays themselves as an expert, but very rarely is this actually the case.
36. Break large goals into smaller, more easily achievable milestones. The more W's you take the less the occasional L stings.
37. Have defined hobbies. Otherwise, your entrepreneurial venture could end up inadvertently filling that role.
38. If you believe in something, don't let just anybody change your mind. However, if they have more direct knowledge of the subject than you, at least listen to what they have to say.
39. Your ego can be your greatest asset and your biggest enemy. Always be confident while staying clear of being arrogant.
40. The past is just that. Don't let it dictate your present.
41. Take time every day to learn. Listen to podcasts, watch videos, read books, and take free courses. In 2021 a quality education doesn't have to cost you a dime.
