Indonesia & Pakistan are ostensibly democracies, and they brutalise minorities and dissenters with a cruelty that matches most nominal dictatorships.

A bigger challenge to this worldview exists in Israel, Hungary, India & Turkey. All have well functioning civil societies that hold their governments to account for their illiberal conduct. The electorate just doesn’t care.

Israel is the country i know best here. The electorate is very well informed about Netanyahu’s corruption, cronyism, and authoritarian nationalism. They haven’t been hoodwinked. They just don’t care. For 40-50% of the country, this is genuinely what they want.
