Months ago I was commissioned to do a story for MOD - a science-focused space for high school/uni students. Overall exhibition is called It's Complicated, and its a collection of really interesting exhibits. Such as parachuting cats and hacking cancer. https://mod.org.au/exhibitions/its-complicated/
(My story is not as cool as those displays) Anyway, I was asked to do a short story that would be split across 4 boards spread throughout the broader exhibition. They wanted Indigenous Futurism that highlighted connectivity of people or systems. Big challenge for me in many ways.
I chose to write 4 micro-stories that connected to each other. One set in the past, one now, and two in the future. I wanted each one to make sense on it's own, as well as be read as a series. Not being a STEMM type of person, it was a challenge coming up with something but -
I expanded on an idea I'd been thinking about previously: what if we used holograms to protest for justice? This was way before the US incident, so when I first saw my story on the website I had a moment of: "Oh no." Then I realised it's different - my concept is non-violent.
My story is now on the website and on display at @MOD There'll soon be a story added to that section, written by another SA-based Aboriginal writer. So check back soon. I only saw title of our exhibit this week - it fits the broader exhibition. Story+ > https://mod.org.au/exhibits/always-was-always-will-be-our-futures/?tab=the-brief
