Alajo Somolu
The most intelligent thrift collector in history:
People of nowadays thinks maybe the expression of"Alajo Somolu" is just a mere word because they didn't know it's origin.
He lived in a world without calculators, computer but he has a memory
that can compete with a modern smart calculator. The yoruba's will say "ori e pe ni Alajo Somolu", meaning you are smart like' Alajo Somolu'.
His name was late Pa Alphaeus Taiwo Olunaike was born on the 16th of September,1915 in Isonyin ,Ogun state Nigeria.
Born as a triplet but lost one of his trois on the crass ignorance of his people who believed triplets were strange and bring bad omen. One of the three was buried alive and the second died at infancy.
He had his primary school education at Emmanuel primary
School at ijebu Isonyin. He went to St John's school and christ cathedral school respectively in Lagos where he completed his secondary school education 1934. After his secondary school,he was enrolled at a tailoring shop owned by Mr Rojaye.
He was an apprentice for nine years and got freedom afterwards. He started his own tailoring shop and started making some money. In 1959,he left Nigeria to cameroon. He learned the business from a cameroonain
neighbour when he sought greener pasture.
In 1954, he started his own thrift collection business_ Alajo Somolu. He did thrift collection around Somolu area of Lagos and beyond. His sincerity, uprightness, small customer relations, deftness with calculations and ability to cram and recollect
The contributions of many clients and hardly using a book was mind-blowing. He earned a good reputations. His transperanxy, accountability and honesty made his business very famous like wildfire. One of the most amazing facts about Alajo Somolu is that
He doesn't use a calculator,he has a very rententive memory. There was a time he sold his vehicle to buy bicycle to makes his movement to the nook and crannies of where he do collects the thrift so easily. This originated the word people do say that,
"ori e pe bi Alajo Somolu ti o ta Motor lati fi ra keke" you're intelligent like Somolu thrift collector who sold his vehicle inorder to a bicycle. He stopped collecting thrifts in 2010 after his children adviced and pleaded that should stop.
Alajo Somolu died on August 11th , 2012.
