A vasectomy is a surgical procedure where the male vas deferens (a tube that carries sperm from the testes to the ejaculatory ducts) is tied off and cut. It's a permanent method of contraception for men who have completed their families. Similar to bilateral tubal ligation (BTL)
in women.
Usually, it's adviced that men store sperm in a sperm bank before vasectomy as nobody knows the future. Men who have had a vasectomy can use such sperm in the future for IVF if they desire a pregnancy. Or can have sperm aspirated directly from the testes or epididymis.
For those who may want to conceive naturally, vasectomy reversal can be done. It involves a microsurgical technique (vaso-vasostomy or vaso-epididymostomy). These can be successfully done (though rarely performed in Nigeria). Reversal within 10 years of vasectomy can yield
pregnancy in 50% of cases and reduces to 25% after 10years.
Note: the quality of sperm after vasectomy reversal is poor compared to before. Hence men are adviced NOT to get a vasectomy till they are SURE they have completed their families. Have a brilliant day!
